Q1. Who is the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing for? 

A1. Registered dental nurses working in a dental practice offering dental sedation (either intravenous or inhalation sedation, or both) and who want to progress their careers to assist in this area of dentistry.

Q2. How long is the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing course? 

A2. This dental nurse sedation course will take 6 months, during which you are required to attend a 3-hour class (live online with a tutor) every month. A total of six 3-hour classes.

Q3. What job could I get at the end of the dental sedation course? 

A3. A qualified dental nurse who has been awarded the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing has the title of “Sedation Nurse” and has the clinical skills and knowledge to support the provision of dental sedation (according to the type covered in their qualification) in any clinical dental setting, be it NHS practice, hospital or private care. A dental nurse may consider working in a dental practice offering sedation for more complex dental treatments, to treat those with dental phobia or to assist in paediatric dental treatments.

Q4. When is the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing exam? 

A4. Examinations are held twice a year, in March and September.

Q5. Electronic Record of Competence (RoC) 

A5. For this course, you can choose which area of dental sedation you want to cover for your qualification. Your options are:

1. Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing (covers both types of dental sedation)
2. Award in Inhalation Sedation Dental Nursing
3. Award in Intravenous Sedation Dental Nursing

All 3 qualifications are equivalent to a Level 4.

You will be required to complete a work-based electronic Record of Competence (RoC). Your requirements for this will depend on which qualification you register for (as above).

There are four sections to the RoC:

1. Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
2. Case Studies
3. Directly Observed Clinical Skills (DOCS) Assessments
4. Supplementary Outcomes

Q6. What is the cost of the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing?

A6.

• The SmileWisdom fee for the course is £900 (including VAT).
• The NEBDN Exam fee of £205 is payable in addition to the SmileWisdom fee.
• The deposit of £150 is not refundable, nor transferable.
• 6 monthly payments of £125 payable by the end of each month. The first payment is due the month of starting the course.
• The total course fee of £900 is payable should you leave the course at any time, less any amount already paid.
• If your course is completed, yet you continue to attend the lessons for any reason, the £125 monthly fees will continue.
• Should you decide to move to another course cohort, i.e., at a different time or day, there will be a fee of £99.
• Fees are payable at the end of the calendar month. A late payment fee of £10 (incl. VAT) per week or part week will apply from the 1^st of the following month.

Q7. What is the cost of the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing exam? 

A7. The current NEBDN exam fee is £205. This is in addition to the SmileWisdom tuition fee.

Q8. Who is the tutor? 

A8. Emma Davis (Dip. DN) is our Dental Sedation Nursing tutor. Our expert trainers/tutors are all NEBDN-approved.

Q9. Is there a minimum level of education? 

A9. Yes. You must be a registered dental nurse with the General Dental Council (GDC). You must have a valid First Aid/Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate of completion.

Q10. Do I need a work placement?

A10. You must have a supportive employer to supervise your electronic Record of Competence (RoC) completion.

Q11. Where does the training take place? 

A11. Training takes place live online in a virtual classroom with your tutor and other students. Everyone’s camera will be on, so you can all see each other. You will be able to ask questions and engage with your tutor directly through the online classroom, just like you would in real life.

Q12. What is the structure of the exam? 

A12. It is a 90-minute written examination composed of two sections:

Part A – 45 multiple choices questions (MCQ)

Part B – 30 extended matching questions (EMQ)

Examinations are held twice a year in March and September.

Q13. What must I do to be awarded the qualification? 

A13. To be awarded this qualification, you must:

1. Attend the live online classes with your tutor
2. Complete and satisfy the requirements of the RoC
3. Pass the exam

Q14. What will the Dental Sedation Nursing qualification allow me to do? 

A14. Essentially, assist with the provision of conscious dental sedation in line with your chosen qualification (intravenous sedation, inhalation sedation or both).

• Prepare the drugs and equipment for dental sedation
• Take a detailed and thorough medical, family and social history to assess general health in preparation for dental sedation
• Provide pre-and post-sedation instruction to the patient and escort in an age-appropriate manner
• Apply anxiety management techniques as needed
• Monitor a patient under conscious sedation
• Connect a breathing system, select the appropriate mask and adjust the gas flow rate as required on an inhalation sedation machine.
