Course Syllabus & Examinations
The NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing is specifically designed for dental nurses wishing to develop professionally and expand their skills within dentistry.
This course is intended to provide dental nurses with the knowledge necessary to provide safe and effective conscious sedation for patients during dental treatment, including critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills, attitudes and behaviours to practice competently.
Syllabus
- Maintaining good clinical practice, professionalism, record keeping and CPD
- Use of technology in dental sedation, risk assessment and audit and patient safety
- Informed consent, patient confidentiality, medico-legal issues
- Dental anxiety, anatomy and physiology
- Pharmacology and patient assessment
- Assisting with the administration of sedation
Knowledge and critical understanding
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of conscious sedation techniques in dentistry
- Understand the range of control of pain and anxiety techniques
- Understand the importance and influence that the patients’ general health may have on the use of conscious sedation
- Demonstrate the knowledge to practice effective conscious sedation
- Understand the importance of complying with contemporary guidance relating to the environment, facilities and equipment required for conscious sedation
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the issues involved in the scientific basis of conscious sedation
Intellectual skills and personal attitude
- Understand limitations, benefits and risks of conscious sedation techniques
- Recognise own limitations, reflect on experiences and appreciate the need for continuing education
- Explain the concept of multidisciplinary care of patients and teamwork
- Empathise with patients and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and colleagues
Practical skills (gained in your practice)
- Assess patients who require conscious sedation for dentistry
- Support the practice with effective and safe conscious sedation
- Assess recovery of patients from conscious sedation
- Remain calm, decisive and purposeful whilst handling difficulties or complications
Record of Competence and Examination
For this course, you can choose which area of dental sedation you want to cover for your qualification. Your options are:
- Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing (covers both types of dental sedation)
- Award in Inhalation Sedation Dental Nursing
- Award in Intravenous Sedation Dental Nursing
All 3 qualifications are equivalent to a Level 4.
Electronic Record of Competence
You will be required to complete a work-based electronic Record of Competence (RoC). Your requirements for this will be dependent on which qualification you register for (as above).
There are four sections to the RoC:
- Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
- Case Studies
- Directly Observed Clinical Skills (DOCS) Assessments
- Supplementary Outcomes
Examination
This is a 90-minute written examination composed of two sections:
- Part A – 45 multiple choice questions (MCQ)
- Part B – 30 extended matching questions (EMQ)
Examinations are held twice a year in March and September.
Award of qualification
To be awarded this qualification, you must:
- Complete and satisfy the requirements of the RoC
- Pass the examination

To enrol on the course, you will need to:
- Be a registered dental nurse with the General Dental Council (GDC)
- Be legally allowed to work in the UK
- Have a supportive employer to supervise your electronic Records of Competence (RoC) completion
- Have a valid First Aid/Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate of completion
- Be competent in written and spoken English to be able to communicate effectively with patients, their families and dental and healthcare professionals.
- Be self-motivated
